Craft Shows & Fairs in Athens, Georgia

Athens operates differently from most Georgia cities when it comes to craft markets.

The University of Georgia and a longstanding independent arts culture have produced a maker community that prioritizes handmade-only standards, locally sourced goods, and a DIY ethos. The craft scene here is smaller in volume than Atlanta's but unusually focused on authenticity.

Athens' Craft Show Scene

Indie South is the center of gravity for the Athens handmade world.

Founded in 2006 by designer and maker Serra Jaggar, it began as an open-air marketplace at the corner of Clayton and Pulaski Streets. It evolved into one of the largest handmade markets in the Southeast, and eventually expanded into a brick-and-mortar boutique. The biannual Craftstravaganzaa market brings emerging artists and crafters from across the South — no commercially produced or imported goods permitted.

Indie South Holiday Hooray in December draws 150+ handmade vendors across two full days. In 2025, it ran December 13–14 — one of Athens' most anticipated annual events.

Additional recurring events:

  • Creature Comforts Holiday Artists Market (December) — 25+ local vendors, live music, food trucks in a beer hall setting
  • West Broad Farmers Market and Garden — regular market with local artisans, craft makers, farmers, and music
  • Athens Farmers Market at Creature Comforts — Wednesday evenings, seasonal, artisan vendors present
  • Burning Love.Craft — annual all-abilities art market and concert at Paloma Park; run by Love.Craft Athens
  • Farmview Market — open-air holiday market with artisan vendors, petting zoo, live music, cookie decorating

Country Fairs & County Events Near Athens

Clarke County (the consolidated city-county government covering Athens) doesn't operate a traditional agricultural county fair.

The nearest options are the Oconee County Fair (Watkinsville, ~10 miles south) and the Jackson County Fair (Commerce area, ~20 miles north).

The Madison-Morgan County Fair is within reasonable driving distance and carries the agricultural fair tradition for the surrounding rural area.

Best Times to Visit Athens for Craft Events

December is the peak month.

The Indie South Holiday Hooray, Creature Comforts Holiday Artists Market, and Farmview Market all run in December — a concentrated stretch of handmade shopping options within a few miles of each other.

The spring Indie South Craftstravaganzaa (typically April–May) is the second major event window.

UGA's academic calendar shapes attendance — craft markets during fall semester (September–November) and late spring (April–May) draw the largest local crowds. Summer is the slow season for major events.
